The General Education and Training Certificate (GETC) comprises the first band of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF1). GETC is the same as a NQF level 1 qualification. To acquire a General Education and Training Certificate, students need to obtain a minimum of 120 credits at AET level 4.
To be deemed competent in a specific learning area and to award the full credit value of a learning area, a student needs to achieve 40% in both the summative and formative assessment components as set out in the GETC(NQF1) National Assessment Guidelines. A GETC (NQF1) will be awarded on achievement of a minimum of 120 credits obtained from learning areas in the fundamental, core and elective categories according to certain rules of combination.
The purpose of the Qualification is to equip learners with foundational learning by acquiring knowledge, skills and values in specified Learning Areas. In addition, it also allows learners to choose Elective Unit Standards which relate to occupational type learning relevant to their area of interest or specialisation. In particular, the purpose of the qualification aims to:

All prospective students will be interviewed and write an entrance examination in order to be placed in the following AET levels.
AET Level 1 (Grade 1-3)
AET Level 2 (Grade 4-5)
AET Level 3 (Grade 6-7)
AET Level 4 (Grade 8-9)
(Full qualification minimum 120 credits)

FUNDAMENTAL COMPONENT [Compulsory] 39 CREDITS (Choose only one language and one Mathematical Learning Area)
CORE COMPONENT: [Compulsory] 32 CREDITS
ELECTIVE COMPONENT (Optional) 49 CREDITS
